The drive
A morning measured by the light, not the hours.
Udawalawa is the largest of Sri Lanka's parks and the quietest of its leopard ranges. Where Yala can fill with jeeps, Wilpattu spreads out and makes for an entirely different experience. The day is longer here. The interior is bigger, the tracks are sandier, and the rewards come to those who sit. Leopard, sloth bear, sambar, and a long list of water birds all use the villus. We plan the route around them, not around the clock.

Wilpattu rewards patience over distance. The villus are natural hides — park at the edge, stay still, and the wildlife comes to the water. Light is best in the first two hours and the last. Bring a long lens; the sightings here are often a little further out than Yala's, and the space around them is what makes the frame.

Bigger, quieter, and built around villus — natural lakes — rather than open plains. Fewer jeeps, longer drives, and a wilder feel. Sightings can take more patience, but you'll often have them to yourself.

5:00 AM, a little earlier than Yala — the gate and the good interior are a longer run.
